New Training Centre at Culham Science Centre

New Training

The UK’s leading training provider for the building services engineering sector, JTL, is creating a learning facility at Culham Science Centre to provide Advanced Apprenticeships, Training and NVQ Assessments to Oxfordshire’s young people and businesses.

JTL has recently signed a five year lease for 8,500 sq. ft. to provide ‘off-the-job’ learning facilities for up to 250 learners specialising in electrical, plumbing, heating and ventilation, Fire and Security and engineering maintenance. This will include an AM2* Centre – required to enable apprentice electricians to complete their training.

The centre will become one of the first in the UK to offer the new Trailblazer apprenticeship scheme announced by the government earlier this year to simplify the system and provide more incentives for employers.

Mark Syrett, Southern Business Manager, JTL, comments:

“Consolidating our Oxfordshire training at Culham Science Centre is the perfect fit as we are now based alongside the future of UK power. In addition, the UK Atomic Energy Authority strongly believes in apprentices and equipping them with higher-level skills to help young people advance to senior positions with industry leading employers. Moving to Culham presents a fantastic opportunity for our apprentices, businesses and future collaborations.”

Refurbishment works will start in the New Year to create four new classrooms and two workshops for practicing test rigs and maintenance repairs.

Dawn Russell, Commercial Property Manager, UK Atomic Energy Authority Property Unit, said:

“We would like to extend a warm welcome to JTL and all learners to Culham Science Centre. The property team is looking forward to facilitating the development of more training courses in the future which will also help to provide skills to our resident science and technology businesses.”

JTL has already consolidated its Oxfordshire training at Culham Science Centre with a turnkey solution provided by Culham’s on site Conference Centre.

Joseph Lo, Head of Centre for JTL, commented:

“We currently have nearly 150 learners on site and can already see the difference in behaviour that being in a professional environment has created. We have unprecedented levels of learning taking place!”

The new facility is due to open in March 2016 to coincide with National Apprentice Week.
