The Culham Science Centre Bike to Work event, as part of national Bike Week held on the 23 June, was a great success and the weather was glorious. 84 riders took part from all over the local and surrounding counties. Some as far a field as Shrivenham to the west and Princes Risborough in the East! As you can see from the ‘factoids’ below, one guy managed to do 35 miles each way!
On offer for those who took part were a hot sausage or bacon baguette, Danish pastries and fresh orange from the restaurant, freshly cooked by CSC’s caterers – OCS. As the weather was so good, we were able to eat ‘al fresco’ in the quadrangle by the restaurant. On hand were the following:
- Bike Doctor
- IMASS Occupational Health nurses (resident on site) for the cyclists, taking their blood pressure and giving helpful healthy advice
- Lunchtime talk by Peter Challis, Area Manager, Sustrans
On Monday 21 June, Mountain Mania from Didcot, a specialised bike shop, displayed accessories and a range of bikes in the foyer. UK Atomic Energy Authority are involved in the cycle purchase scheme for their staff and bikes can be purchased through the scheme at Mountain Mania.
Throughout the week, there were displays in the 2 main foyers on site with information on cycling and safety tips.
Allen Edwards, Head of Assurance, CCFE presented the prizes to the winners.
1st Prize of a Garmin SatNav and holder went to Richard Gardner, Ludger who cycled in from Abingdon
Runners up Phil Prior, CCFE, OX14 and Will Studholme, CCFE from OX4, both received a set of CAT LED cycle lights.
Factoids from the day:
- Furthest journey achieved was by Jim Conboy, CCFE, who cycled in from HP5 - a trip of 35 miles each way! He got home at 8pm that night AND did a day’s work.
- First to arrive at the Registration Desk on the morning was Steve Fowler, CCFE, OX14
- 114 registered online their intention to take part and 85 actually registered for the breakfast and prize draw on the day
- The postcode with the most cyclists was OX14, with 28 cyclists
- Apart from local routes, cyclists came from as far as Little Milton, Faringdon, Witney and Shrivenham
Keep a look out for the photographs from the event, which will be published on flickr via www.ccfe.ac.uk website, shortly. These include the Sustrans lunchtime talk and Mountain Mania bike exhibition as well as the event itself. |
