You may have read in the press that UKAEA Ltd., the part of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority that this involved in decommissioning and waste management, has been sold to Babcock International Ltd. The took effect from 1 November 2009.
From this date the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, which remains in the public sector, will comprise the fusion activities at Culham and management of the Culham Science Centre, together with some residual activities. The abbreviation "UKAEA" is part of the sale to Babcock Internaltional Ltd, and we will therefore no longer be able to use this acronym.
These changes do not affect the Culham Science Centre location identity. However, we have taken this opportunity to bring all of the fusion work at Culham under the new umbrella "Culham Centre for Fusion Energy", or "CCFE" for short. This has been chosen because Culham is known worldwide as a leading fusion research location and fusion energy reflects a core mission of the Authority to make fusion power production a reality.
